College Entrance Exams: SAT & ACT

Preparing for college starts with understanding the key steps in the admissions process—one of which is taking a college entrance exam. Most four-year colleges and universities require either the SAT or ACT as part of their application process. These exams not only play a role in admissions decisions but can also determine eligibility for scholarships, honors programs, and early college opportunities. Whether you're a student planning ahead or a parent supporting your child's college journey, use this page as a helpful guide to understand what these tests are, why they matter, and how to stay on top of registration deadlines.
SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test)
The SAT is a standardized college entrance exam widely accepted by universities across the United States. It measures a student’s knowledge and skills in reading, writing, and math—core areas essential for success in college. Taking the SAT can open doors to scholarships, dual credit programs, and competitive college admissions. We encourage all students planning to attend a four-year university to take the SAT at least once during their junior or early senior year. Below are the upcoming SAT test dates, along with registration and late registration deadlines to help your family plan ahead.

ACT (American College Testing)
The ACT is another nationally recognized college admissions test that assesses students in English, math, reading, and science, with an optional writing section. Many colleges accept either the ACT or SAT, and students may choose the test that best fits their strengths. A strong ACT score can improve admission chances and qualify students for scholarships and honors programs. We recommend students consider taking the ACT in their junior year and again in senior year if needed. Please review the important dates below to ensure you don’t miss a testing opportunity.
