Dual Credit

What is Dual Credit?

The Southwest Preparatory School Dual Credit Program offers motivated high school students a valuable opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school. Through partnerships with local colleges and universities, eligible juniors and seniors can enroll in college-level courses that count toward both high school graduation requirements and college degrees.

Dual Credit helps students get a jump start on their postsecondary education, potentially saving time and money while also providing an early introduction to the expectations of college-level work. These courses allow students to experience the challenge and responsibility of college in a supportive and familiar environment.

At Southwest Prep, we are proud to offer growing Dual Credit opportunities across several campuses:

  • Northwest Campus partners with Texas A&M University–San Antonio (TAMUSA) through its Early College High School program.

  • Southeast Campus offers a Law Enforcement & Criminal Justice Career and Technical Education (CTE) program with Dual Credit through San Antonio College (SAC).

  • Seguin Campus is currently working to establish a Dual Credit partnership with Northeast Lakeview College – New Braunfels campus.

As these programs expand, we remain committed to helping students explore college and career pathways that align with their goals and interests.

  • Benefits of Dual Credit
Earn high school and college credit at the same time
  • Start working toward an associate degree or college major early
  • Take a wider variety of classes not typically available in high school
  • Save money on future college tuition and fees
  • Access college resources such as libraries, student services, and enrichment activities
  • Build confidence by navigating college-level coursework with support
  • Reduce the risk of "senior slump" during the final year of high school

Challenges to Consider
While the rewards are significant, Dual Credit courses come with added responsibility:
  • Students must manage different college and high school calendars
  • Some students may find college-level coursework more demanding
  • Transportation may be required for in-person classes (online options available)
  • Requires maturity, time management, and self-discipline to succeed

What’s the Difference Between Dual Credit and Concurrent Enrollment?
  • Dual Credit: Students earn both high school and college credit for the same course.
  • Concurrent Enrollment: Students take college courses while in high school, but these courses only count for college credit (not high school credit).

Southwest Preparatory School is committed to expanding Dual Credit opportunities that support student success beyond high school. If you are interested in learning more or determining your eligibility, please contact your campus counselor.
