Ms. Heather Gomez » Welcome!

Welcome!

Hello! Welcome to my classroom! My name is Heather Gomez. I am currently the 1st Grade teacher here on the Northwest Campus. I look forward to adding you and your family to mine ❤
I am a 33-year-old dog mom to 2 precious fur babies, both chihuahuas. I LOVE to read and crochet though I can only do one pattern 😆 I have 1 brother who is 10 and starting his own 5th-grade adventure this year. I have a minor obsession with narwhals, owls, and llamas. I adore the colors, mint, teal, and dusty rose. In my free time, you can usually find me at the park walking with my pupperinos or in the pool, weather permitting. I am engaged and planning a wedding is not as easy as I thought lol
I started my education career at UTSA Where I graduated with my degree and EC-6th grade certification In December 2013. On August 22, 2022, I completed my Masters's in Instructional Leadership. I began teaching in SAISD in February 2014. I spent the next 4.5 years as a kindergarten teacher. In the fall of 2018, I started at the Northwest Campus as a Pre-k teacher. The next year I taught 3rd-5th grade Science and Social Studies. For the last 2 years, I taught 3rd grade and while there were many challenges due to COVID-I9, there were so many more joyful memories to be made. Last year, I taught Pre-K and am starting a new adventure this year in 1st.  🤗
Teaching is my passion. I became an educator because I grew up hard. My family, like so many others struggled to make ends meet. Because of this I wore Hand-Me-Downs, didn't get the coolest gadgets or toys, and definitely didn't have cable or even internet. I also had family drama. all this put together got me labeled as the weird kid that didn't belong. This often led to bullying in one form or another. My teachers always made their classrooms feel like safe havens. From Mrs. Truxel in kindergarten who told me it was ok to like Barney, to Ms. Debruyn in High School Spanish who shared her " Weirdness" with all of her students and helped me realize that high school drama was not worth the tears. I knew that I wanted to make a space where students felt safe, loved, and valid. The connections made in the classroom can be lasting, that's why I teach.
