Southwest Prep Southeast Launches Law Enforcement CTE Program
Southwest Preparatory School’s Southeast campus is proud to introduce its Law Enforcement Program, a Career and Technical Education (CTE) initiative designed to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in the field of criminal justice. Open to students in grades 8-12, this program aims to equip young learners with the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed for future careers in law enforcement and public safety.
A Hands-On Approach to Learning
The Law Enforcement Program goes beyond traditional classroom instruction, offering students real-world exposure through a variety of hands-on activities. According to Travis Shoemake, Assistant Principal at the Southeast campus, "Our goal is to immerse students in practical experiences that help them understand the complexities of law enforcement while developing critical thinking, leadership, and ethical decision-making skills."
The curriculum covers essential topics such as criminal law, ethics in law enforcement, patrol and investigation techniques, and the use of technology in policing. Students will also engage in crisis management, conflict resolution, and physical fitness training tailored for law enforcement careers. "It’s important that our students not only gain knowledge but also develop the ability to make sound decisions in high-pressure situations," Shoemake added.
Real-World Experience Through Community Partnerships
A key component of the program is the emphasis on experiential learning. Students will have the opportunity to participate in simulations, such as mock investigations, traffic stops, and emergency response scenarios. Ride-alongs with local law enforcement agencies will provide firsthand insight into the day-to-day responsibilities of officers. Additionally, guest speakers from various sectors of law enforcement, legal professionals, and community leaders will visit the program to share their expertise.
"By building strong connections with local law enforcement agencies, we’re able to offer our students experiences that truly prepare them for the field," Shoemake noted. "These partnerships also help foster a positive relationship between students and law enforcement professionals."
A Pathway to College and Career Readiness
The Law Enforcement Program also offers students pathways to higher education and career certification. Through a potential partnership with San Antonio College, students may earn dual credit for courses that count toward both high school graduation and college credit. This collaboration could provide access to advanced training and further educational opportunities in law enforcement and criminal justice.
In addition, students may have access to internships, industry certifications such as CPR/First Aid and NIMS (National Incident Management System), and the ability to take certification exams upon completing the program. "These certifications and experiences give our students a competitive edge when pursuing careers in law enforcement or related fields," Shoemake emphasized.
A Vision for the Future
With previous experience teaching law enforcement programs at other schools, Shoemake brings valuable insights and best practices to Southwest Prep’s initiative. "We want to create an environment that blends academic instruction with real-world exposure," he said. "Virtual simulations, hands-on activities, and strong partnerships with local agencies will ensure that our students receive a well-rounded education."
Beyond preparing students for careers in law enforcement, the program also aims to instill leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills that will benefit them in any profession. "This isn’t just about training future police officers," Shoemake explained. "It’s about developing responsible, ethical, and community-minded individuals who can make a positive impact no matter what path they choose."
As the Law Enforcement CTE Program continues to grow, Southwest Preparatory School remains committed to providing students with unique opportunities that prepare them for success in college, careers, and beyond.
