Exploratory Program at Southwest Prep. Frequently asked questions
1. What is the exploratory program?
The exploratory program is designed to resemble many components of the technical workplace. The program familiarizes students with the many technical and industrial programs taught and trained at the college to include hands on technical skills as well as employability skills.
2. What does the program cover?
High school students rotate through occupational programs such as the welding, auto body, electrical, diesel, air conditioning, machining, computer-aided architectural drafting, aircraft maintenance, and homebuilding. Students participate in hands on activities while acquiring valuable occupational information in order to make informed career decisions.
3. Who is eligible for the program?
The exploratory program is open to any student with who is 16 years of age or older and has a minimum of 5 high school credits.
4. When does the class meet?
Classes will meet Monday through Friday beginning the first day of the semester.
5. How long is each class?
Each class meets for two hours each day. Students will leave Southwest Preparatory during 5th period and attend the two hour program.
6. How will I get to St. Philip’s College SW Campus?
Southwest Preparatory School will provide transportation to and from the college.
7. What is expected of me?
Students are expected to maintain good attendance, have very few disciplinary problems, dress appropriately for class and follow all rules and regulations of the college.
8. What is the cost of the program?
There is no cost to Southwest Preparatory School students.
9. What happens at the end of the course?
Upon completion of the student rotations, the college advisor and the post-secondary education director will conduct student interviews to determine which program might be right for you. Students may then have an opportunity to continue to pursue that study thorough our dual credit program.
10. How do I apply?
Student must fill out an application and be called into an interview. Both parent and student must attend the interview. Students will be notified via telephone or mail of their acceptance into the program.
